Architect William Douglas Lee (who also constructed the famous Chateau Marmont on Sunset Boulevard) built the El Royale in 1929 as L.A.’s answer to New York’s storied Dakota Building. The building is situated across the street from the prestigious Wilshire Country Club in historic Hancock Park — a magnificent, tree-lined residential area of Los Angeles famous for its stately mansions (which are home to legends in the entertainment industry). All apartments contain the building’s original architectural features, including ornate moldings, parquet oak wood floors, and original 1920’s tiled bathrooms. From classics Loretta Lynn and Clark Gable to Uma Thurman, Nicholas Cage, and Ben Stiller, El Royale’s list of residents has read as a “Who’s Who” of Tinseltown elite.
